Raising awareness about child abuse in the UK

User Experience Architect

THE BRIEF & CHALLENGE

Our client - a well knows charity - came to us with the aim of raising awareness around a specific type of child abuse, that although it is mainly carried out outside of the UK, has ended up migrating to the UK through the different communities moving from their country of origin. This harmful practice is considered an abuse in the UK. However in many other countries where it began, it is still considered as part of the tradition.

The United Nations state that this practice affects 3.8 million people around the world.

Unfortunately this abusive practice is still a little-known phenomenon in our society and the aim of our client is to raise awareness of the actions that professionals need to take to educate and prevent this to happen.

RESULT

An e-learning platform that provides a CPD and helps professionals such as teachers, GPs and parents to deal powerfully when dealing with this child abuse.

COLLABORATIVE DESIGN WITH THE CLIENT

Collaboration was at the key of this project. From the beginning, we worked closely with the client to identify what the best contact could be to build a platform that could work for our end users.

The key challenge was how to powerfully communicate this topic in a way that would maintain a non-judgemental tone, engage the user and at the same time raise awareness about this harmful practice.

Key stakeholders helped us define the story and framework, to ultimately organise the content in a way that would be easily digestible and engaging. To build the framework, it was important to dive into the ‘Discovery' phase and understand how users learn online. We looked at existing e-learning experiences across different sectors. We wanted users to be driven not only by the opportunity of gaining a CPD but also by a sense of social responsibility to share the course with other professionals, helping spread awareness about this harmful practice..

UNDERSTANDING THE LANDSCAPE

It was essential to understand what the landscape offers in terms of e-learning platforms, what are the best practices are the key points that we had to consider for our project. The content included a quiz, some reading material and some guidelines that would help professionals understand more about this practice, considered a child abuse in the UK. What was the best treatment to ensure that the content was communicated effectively to our users?

We decided that an animation would be the best way to communicate the essentials about this harmful practice. In terms of the Quiz, we wanted users to feel engaged, know where they were in the process and motivated. We wanted our users to gain their CPD and at the same time make sure they would be engaged and happy to share the e-learning platform with other colleagues.

ANIMATION: exploring treatments

We explored different treatments for the story and finally chosen for a hand-drawing video.

Delivery

Besides providing an illustrated video made of more than 250 frames, we delivered the framework for the e-learning platform and collaborated with our client to build this internally. In addition we had the amazing opportunity to interview and film one of the victims of this harmful practice. Our client was extremely happy, however due to internal changes in the leadership the platform has been modified.
